Women’s STEMLaw

Women practising law face obstacles that their male colleagues do not, which is why they need a strategy of their own. Through Women’s Digital Law Empowerment ® we offer resources and programmes to highlight and empower women: information and training are the pillars, together with specific actions to improve employability in the legal sector and other fields.

STEMLaw: science, technology and law

Acquiring competencies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the STEM disciplines), together with the arts, agriculture, medicine and law, is decisive for reducing the digital gender gap. A technology entrepreneurship programme for professional women — with particular relevance in computer science and law — is of vital importance in the era of the Digital Revolution: we focus on the skills needed to become entrepreneurs and leaders at the intersection of technology and law.

What if women in the legal world and their law firms made use of the Internet for marketing and business development? Our core belief is that women lawyers can build powerful online profiles that promote their professional expertise and leadership, and that these enhanced profiles lead to more business.

What more can we do?

Integrate ICTs into formal education.
Increase women’s participation in ICT-related studies.
Launch information and awareness-raising campaigns.
Increase the advancement of women in the ICT sector.

The second digital divide

Beyond access, there is a second digital gender divide in digital skills —the eSkills that determine the effective use of technology—. Coding is the “new literacy”: programming and computational thinking are essential competencies of the digital age, and the world faces a shortage of both basic digital skills and ICT specialists.

Three core areas we must promote:

Ending gender stereotypes.
Creating more opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
Promoting technology skills.
