INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, or International Day against Gender-Based Violence, is observed every year on 25 November to denounce the violence perpetrated against women worldwide and to call for policies in all countries to eradicate it.

Violence against women has become a structural problem. According to the UN, one in three women worldwide experiences violence and no country is free from this pandemic, which is one of the most widespread human rights violations in its various forms: physical, sexual, psychological, economic and cultural, affecting women from birth to old age.

To this must be added violence against women in its technological dimension. Women are the main target of online violence, new forms of gender-based violence emerging as a result of the rise and development of new technologies and social media, which are powerful tools serving this violence (now also digital) and which require new regulations and safeguards for women. We therefore urge all States to address them without delay
