Fabián Salvioli is an Argentine jurist, attorney and Doctor of Juridical Sciences; he is a full professor (catedrático) holding the chairs of Public International Law and Human Rights; he directs the Human Rights Institute and is the founder and director of the Master’s Program in Human Rights at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata; he has more than one hundred and fifty publications, including six books and scholarly articles on international law, human rights and education; he has taught postgraduate and doctoral courses and delivered lectures in more than thirty countries on five continents. He is a member of the general assemblies of the International Institute of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France) and the Instituto Interamericano de Derechos Humanos (San José, Costa Rica); and co-directs the Berg Institute of International Relations (Madrid).
He has three decades of practical experience in international human rights law; in the Inter-American system, he has litigated and advised on cases before the Inter-American Commission and Court, and has presided over ad hoc reparations tribunals in the context of friendly settlements; at the United Nations, he served on the Human Rights Committee from 2009 to 2016, a body he also chaired in 2015-2016; furthermore, in 2018 the Human Rights Council appointed him United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, a position he currently holds.
In recognition of his career he has received numerous awards and honors; among them, he was named Illustrious Citizen of La Plata, Distinguished Personality of the Province of Buenos Aires, Illustrious Graduate of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Honorary Professor at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Honorary Professor at the Universidad Nacional de La Pampa,, and Doctor Honoris Causa from the Instituto Universitario Puebla, in Mexico.
