IPANDETEC, of Panama, has joined the Regional Coalition for Information Integrity in Latin America (RAC), a cooperation platform against disinformation. The initiative aims to coordinate responses to risks facing democracies.
The Instituto Panameño de Derecho y Nuevas Tecnologías (IPANDETEC) has announced that it is joining the Regional Coalition for Information Integrity in Latin America (RAC). The initiative seeks to strengthen cooperation among countries and sectors in addressing disinformation, content manipulation and information pollution.
According to the organisation, the spread of false information, polarisation and the use of content generated with artificial intelligence pose new challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean. These phenomena can weaken trust in institutions, influence electoral processes and limit citizen participation. They can also overlap with technology-facilitated gender-based violence, which affects women's presence in public life.
The RAC builds on precedents such as the Global Coalition for Information Integrity in Elections, promoted in 2022 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and on national initiatives in Bolivia, Chile, Honduras and Peru. It is conceived as a collaboration space among electoral bodies, regional organisations, digital platforms, technology companies, civil society, academia and international organisations.
Its lines of work are South-South regional cooperation, multisectoral dialogue, the exchange of research and evidence, and a stronger Latin American and Caribbean voice in global debates on digital governance and artificial intelligence in elections. IPANDETEC states that it will contribute its experience in digital rights, Internet governance and media and information literacy.
