Moody’s, the world’s leading credit rating agency, has published a report examining the opportunities and challenges posed by smart contracts, which are considered essential to the adoption of blockchain technology.
Moody’s points out that smart contracts have the potential to reduce risk, increase productivity, cut costs, embed compliance rules and bring transparency to complex digital agreements.
These contracts also enable precise transactions, unsecured refinancing, fast and secure settlement, the scheduling of actions, the securing of transactions and automatic execution triggered by external events. However, Moody’s notes that widespread adoption will require stronger cybersecurity, legal frameworks and technology standards that inspire trust and prevent vulnerabilities.
Moody’s suggests that, if smart contracts are adopted on a large scale, they could revolutionise the financial sector and move it towards a more automated and efficient model. To achieve this, however, it is crucial to develop regulations that mitigate risks, promote interoperability and give users legal and technological certainty.
In short, smart contracts are a disruptive tool that could transform the way business is done in finance, as decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms show. These platforms illustrate the advantages and potential of smart contracts in financial transactions.
