Blockchain startup MediConnect has completed the workflow for a Proof of Concept (PoC) designed to track medicines through the supply chain and has begun integrating the processes of online pharmacy UK Meds into its platform.
Tracking medicines through the supply chain
According to a press release shared with Cointelegraph on September 26, MediConnect established a foundation and methodology for completing the proof of concept, which will allow prescription medicines to be tracked and managed throughout the supply chain, from the manufacturer to end users.
In 2020, MediConnect also plans to complete a pilot program involving up to 10 participants. As part of the pilot, MediConnect will integrate the processes of online pharmacy UK Meds into its blockchain-based platform, enabling products to be tracked through the supply chain and preventing the misuse of prescription medicines.
Blockchain in healthcare
Earlier this year, the Ugandan government partnered with MediConnect to track counterfeit medicines in the country. As in the UK Meds case, the blockchain-based platform allows prescription medicines to be recorded, thereby identifying counterfeit medicines and preventing their distribution through the pharmaceutical supply chain.
The potential of blockchain technology in the healthcare and supply-chain sectors is recognized by governments and institutions in other countries. More recently, the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Health and Prevention launched a blockchain system to record and share healthcare data.
Technology startup Nebula Genomics launched anonymous genetic testing in early September, allowing customers to purchase whole-genome sequencing and provide saliva samples without having to share personal data such as their name, address or credit-card number.
