The case of the Canary Islands

Lawyer Antonio Tejeda Encinas, President of the Euro-American Committee of Digital Law - CEA Digital Law, CEO of Meta Channel Corp

Spain’s current landscape invites us to reflect on the divisions that have marked our country:

For a long time, we have talked about the famous (thanks to Machado) ‘two Spains’, an ideological fracture that split the country into two opposing visions. Today, however, that division has evolved, giving way to a third Spain: the one that struggles every day against poverty and social exclusion, especially in regions such as the Canary Islands.

The 2024 State of Poverty Report, presented by the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN), highlights an alarming fact: not only is there a gap between the north and the south of Spain, but a large part of the population lives on the margins of well-being. Regions such as the Canary Islands are especially vulnerable, with one of the highest poverty rates in the country (the second highest, behind Murcia). This reality cannot be ignored.

Both the public and the private sector (other essential actors should join the effort) have an important role to play in creating opportunities for all, especially in regions such as the Canary Islands, where the struggle for dignity is an everyday reality.

From my perspective as an international lawyer, CEO of Meta Channel Corporation and President of the Euro-American Committee of Digital Law - CEA Digital Law – the former a company devoted to digital transformation and innovative global strategies, the latter devoted to academic work and research on those subjects – I firmly believe that technology and digitalisation are powerful tools for narrowing these social gaps. However, true innovation must not be only technological but also social: inclusion must be the engine driving any sustainable progress we wish to implement.

SOME ideas (off the cuff) for redrawing Canarian society:

The creation of a ‘Canarian Forum for Business Innovation and Sustainability’, where CEOE-Tenerife (I throw down the gauntlet) or APD (which focuses on improving business management and the development of senior executives, and could contribute to the debate or act as guarantors of the idea)…, together with leading companies, would discuss how technological innovation can be aligned with sustainability goals. This forum would address topics such as artificial intelligence applied to sustainable development, renewable energy in industry, the circular economy, sustainable tourism, the blue economy… shall I go on?

What other initiatives could we develop together to reduce poverty and foster social innovation in the Canary Islands? I am open to debating and generating ideas, and to creating a Canarian think tank with those who share this vision of the future.

Lawyer Antonio Tejeda Encinas, President of the Euro-American Committee of Digital Law - CEA Digital Law, CEO of Meta Channel Corp Spain’s current landscape invites us to reflect on the divisions that have marked our country: For a long time, we have talked about the famous (thanks to Machado) ‘two Spains’, an ideological fracture that […]

[1104
["post-123072","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analysis-opinion
["GET
