While thousands of jobs have been eliminated, hundreds of other professions that now keep the world moving have been created. The next step—an unattainable goal only a few years ago—is to incorporate artificial intelligence and big data at every level of the workplace.

Artificial intelligence is now ready to get to work. According to a recent IBM study, as many as 120 million workers in the world’s 12 largest economies will need training in AI and intelligent automation over the next three years. Companies face the great challenge of the 21st century in AI and big data, which grew by 569% between 2016 and 2018.

Despite their impact and the need to use them, nearly half of the CEOs surveyed by IBM admitted that they lacked the resources required to provide training in and apply the skills created by these new technologies. Army Wright, managing partner at IBM Talent & Transformation, explained the situation in a statement: “While executives recognize the gravity of the problem, half of those surveyed admit they have no skills-development strategies to address their largest gaps.”

Concern about AI’s impact on employment has become a seemingly endless cycle. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, warned that AI could make many jobs “pointless.” As Musk has stated, a Brookings Institution report released last January warned that robots could replace a quarter of US jobs by 2030.

IBM says it is essential for companies to narrow the skills gap required for the “age of artificial intelligence” as much as possible, although it acknowledges that this is a difficult task. As the study shows, the time needed to close that gap through employee training has increased more than tenfold over the past four years. The main problem is the dizzying pace at which new techniques and technologies emerge, making knowledge obsolete and creating new gaps.

IBM therefore recommends that companies share the AI skills available to them and involve all employees, creating a culture of “continuous learning.”

originally published in thetechnolawgist

Looking for a First-Class Business Plan Consultant?

In recent years, technology has revolutionized the labor market.
