It was a very natural transition; I discovered that what I really wanted was to unleash the entrepreneur I had always been. I came from practicing law at Cuatrecasas and, after living abroad for many years, mainly in Brazil and the United States, I wanted to return to Spain. So I immersed myself in the entrepreneurship world in Valencia, my home town. We spotted a great business opportunity in Legal Tech, seeing what was being done in the United States and knowing that in Spain there was no project along these lines, and I decided to found Bounsel, an intelligent end-to-end contract management platform powered by artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\nBeing able to build a technologically powerful SaaS tool aimed at B2B and, specifically, at large corporations, so that legal departments can do their job better. We want our tools to empower legal departments and help them increase efficiency by automating their workflow<\/i> and their contract creation, drafting, negotiation and execution processes. In addition, the social work we do at Bounsel gives us great satisfaction.<\/span>\n

I decided to venture into the legal tech world because the legal sector is changing enormously and technology is an important part of that change. For me, the greatest challenge in transformation is cultural change: getting team members to get involved in change processes, feel part of them, and embrace them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Working at the tip of the spear to modernize the business and practice of law, I have the opportunity to learn every day. Working with Legal Tech industry leaders also allows me to promote the creation of diverse teams, produce solutions less affected by design bias, and support Legal Tech initiatives to improve access to justice and the future of legal education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Change management, without a doubt. Promoting legal innovation requires selling a 16th-century guild on 21st-century benefits and mandates, and a great deal of finesse with people is required to encourage enthusiasm for evolution in a risk-averse environment focused on return on investment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

4. Cherylin Tan, CEO at AsiaLawNetwork.com (Singapore)<\/b><\/h4>\n
Why Legal Tech?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

I founded AsiaLawNetwork.com in 2014 as a result of my personal frustration at not being able to find a lawyer at a good price when I needed one most.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

At that <\/span>time, I also saw a gap between lawyers and technology that desperately needed a solution. By adopting technology, lawyers can work more efficiently and free themselves up to concentrate on the most important aspects of their work: providing legal advice. Later, the desire to increase lawyers’ efficiency and effectiveness led me to found Tessaract.io, a management system [“practice management”] designed for the refined control of tasks and absolute efficiency. Lawyers who have adopted this system have seen their daily tasks become much more efficient and their productivity increase.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

My greatest satisfaction comes from having built a brand that people can trust. The team has worked hard to make sure we can be there for everyone who comes to us, and keeping that commitment has been difficult because it means sleepless nights, prioritizing users’ problems. We feel tremendously fortunate that law firms from across the region come to visit our offices when they are in Singapore after meeting with the Law Society of Singapore and the Singapore Academy of Law.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Our biggest challenge right now is how to scale the business across the entire Asian region, which is a huge challenge in itself, given that it is a multilingual, multicultural region with different judicial systems. Most Legal Tech companies focus exclusively on English-speaking countries, since they are easier to access, but because of our mission, we want to reach communities that have greater needs and access to less help. It will be an incredible journey!<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I am a highly experienced lawyer who is passionate about the immense <\/span>positive impact that the integration of law and technology can generate. This is the reason why, after having practiced corporate and securities law for seven years at two leading Israeli law firms, I became legal knowledge manager and head of legal technology implementation at Fischer Behar Chen. Bien Orion & Co (FBC & Co), one of Israel’s largest law firms, which has been at the forefront of legal innovation in Israel and is considered a pioneer in the field of knowledge management and innovative legal technology in the Israeli legal arena.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

While the Israeli Legal Tech industry is still in a stage of relative infancy, the realization that change is inevitable and will happen faster than expected seems to be starting to spread across the Israeli legal scene. In a country where innovation and entrepreneurship are our native languages, it is natural that the Israeli Legal Tech market will soon begin to live up to the legal standing of the \u00abstartup nation\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Two years ago, I attended a legal innovation conference in Europe, where I heard an interesting expression that went like this: \u201cchange has never happened this fast before, and it will never again happen this slowly\u201d. It made me think about the local legal industry in Israel, which has traditionally been slow to adopt technological advances compared to other countries around the world where Legal Tech is advancing at an accelerated pace. This phrase inspired me to get involved in the Global Legal Hackathon initiative and organize the country’s first legal hackathon in 2018, which I hoped would help raise awareness in the local legal scene of the benefits of integrating technology into the legal sphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was fortunate to organize the Israel Legal Hackathon for the second consecutive year, held several weeks ago in Tel Aviv at our firm FBC & Co in collaboration with Tech & Law Israel as part of the Global Legal Hackathon initiative spanning more than 45 cities around the world. Almost 150 people took part in the Israel Legal Hackathon 2019 and it has been an incredible experience of teamwork, creative ideas and solutions with a potential impact on the global legal industry. The hackathon has certainly stimulated interest in the Legal Tech field within the local legal scene and has marked a new chapter in its development. For me, this is a high point of my professional achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am proud to represent the \u201cStartup Nation\u201d at a remarkable global legal innovation event like the Global Legal Hackathon, and I am honored to have been selected as Israel’s Ambassador for the Global Rise Of Women in LegalTech (GROWL) initiative aimed at supporting the next women leaders in legal innovation around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

With only 8% of tech companies in Israel led by women, and being the only professional in the Israeli legal scene whose role is fully dedicated to integrating knowledge management and technology into legal practice, I hope to encourage more women to get involved in the Legal Tech community around the world and do what they are passionate about.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Change management is always a challenge, especially within the legal industry, which in many respects is a backward-looking profession based primarily on precedent. This type of mindset does not necessarily foster innovation in general, let alone the adoption of disruptive technology. Indeed, for a profession that is traditionally risk-averse, innovation naturally pushes lawyers out of their comfort zones. As Jack Welch (long-time CEO of General Electric) observed, organizations face a significant and potentially unrecoverable risk when the rate of internal change is slower than the pace of external change. In my opinion, in a world where the pace of change is so fast, innovation should be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat to the legal industry. To succeed as a law firm operating in the new economy, I believe firms should be more open to experimenting with innovative initiatives, including new technologies, and adopt an organizational mindset that supports an innovation-friendly environment. Focusing on solving a particular problem could be a good way to start down the path of innovation, while involving the organization’s employees and clients throughout the entire process to achieve a successful innovation initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n \n

7. Janelle Kerrisk, CEO Helix Legal, LawLawcer (Australia)<\/b><\/h4>\n
Why Legal Tech?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Before starting with Helix Legal, I spent 6 years as a partner at an Australian firm. I was <\/span>the first female partner in the Queensland office and the youngest lawyer appointed partner in the firm’s 50-year history.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I worked tirelessly to reach what I believed was the pinnacle of a career in the world of law: equity partnership, a big office (\u201ccorner office\u201d), a seat at the table. The problem was that it was more than evident to me that the world was changing, but the law was not, to the detriment of lawyers and clients. I wanted to create a team of new legal minds who would deliver solutions in the way that made the most sense for the client’s existing business structures. I did not want to turn a blind eye to the changes taking place in other industries. I wanted to find ways to use technology to increase lawyers’ capacity to serve clients and to create a flexible, supportive workplace that encouraged collaboration. Even without a background in technology, it was obvious to me that Legal Tech was the way to achieve the business goals I set for Helix.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Part of my journey in using technology to achieve my business goals has involved discovering and developing our own technology, which now has a life of its own as LawLancer. LawLancer is a digital marketplace that connects legal service providers with law students to carry out legal research as freelancers. Late one night at the office, in the early days of Helix Legal, I found myself longing for the access I had once enjoyed to bright, passionate young lawyers who could help me with some of the heavy research on the cases I was handling. I had been using the freelance economy to build a virtual marketing department for Helix Legal and found myself wishing there were a similar platform where I could access students. It did not exist at the time, so we started building it: www.lawlancer.legal.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The biggest challenge is accepting that there is no possible way to know everything. Selecting the right people who are absolute experts in their niches is the only way to operate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I decided to enter the Legal Tech sector because I was convinced that by incorporating sophisticated technological tools and large doses of creativity, better legal services could be provided. Legal Tech has opened the doors to the freedom and flexibility I wanted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Without a doubt, my greatest success has been founding The Technolawgist. I have found a team of ambitious professionals who are as passionate about Legal Tech as I am. Now I wake up every day at 6 in the morning with an overwhelming passion; there are not enough hours in the day to grow this publication. Knowing that every day I contribute to the transformation of the legal sector and bring Legal Tech closer to jurists around the world is a true privilege.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\nFrom my point of view, the greatest challenge now facing all of us who firmly believe in Legal Tech is the change of mindset. We have to break old inertias and abandon the burdens that keep the sector stagnant. Implementing innovative strategies means adopting an innovative mindset and being open to change. Losing the fear of what others will say and simply acting, experimenting and moving forward.<\/span>\n

I have always liked technology. Not so much at the programming level, but as a user. And law is my life, to be honest. <\/span>So it was simply the natural consequence of doing what I liked most.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I believe that something as historic and as cultural as law, together with an element as new, as changing and as disjunctive as technology, can be the perfect combination for evolving as a society. Without law, technology is a tool without control, and law without technology is a system blind and deaf to what surrounds it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

It is very relative, to be honest. It depends on what each person understands by \u201csuccess\u201d. For me, I would distinguish two: my greatest professional success is leading the strategy of a firm like Pinsent Masons worldwide at 31 years of age. It is an enormous responsibility and a constant challenge, but when you love what you do, you do not feel the weight.<\/span><\/p>\n

My greatest personal satisfaction is the human team I work with. When you have a certain amount of professional experience, you learn to place less value on the job \u201cposition\u201d and much more on the \u201cteam\u201d you do it with. And I am immensely lucky to work with and learn every day from good people and excellent professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

I would say that when you want to devote yourself to working as a lawyer in a new sector, full of uncertainties, the challenge is the constant \u201cis this the best decision? The best option?\u201d. Since there is no pre-established path, sometimes the next step feels like walking along the edge of an abyss. For this, I often turn to my professional colleagues or teammates. Some have a wealth of experience in very complicated fields and their advice is pure gold. It is very complicated, and not at all necessary, to face challenges alone. In company, everything is easier. <\/span><\/p>\n \n

I have always been interested in the way technology and the legal sector work together. I have suffered the tedium of the monotonous, slow tasks that we lawyers face. Ever since I discovered that innovative companies were appearing in the sector, I have been involved in this process of evolution, discovering that I wanted to be part of it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Getting to know how technology is adding value for our clients at Juro<\/a>, a company that provides contract management services from the beginning to the end of the contracting process with artificial intelligence, <\/span>and seeing the positive changes in their attitude towards legal tasks. Added to that is my great satisfaction, which comes from non-lawyers’ understanding of the Legal Tech sector. I also find the direct contact with the client and the responsibility that entails very positive, something that is not usual from the outset in the traditional lawyer’s role.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

From a legal point of view, I still have to learn many technological concepts related to our profession. It is necessary to understand how the different technologies work and how they interact with clients. Keeping up to date with technologies is a great challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n \n

I started in the Legal Tech sector by accident. I was not satisfied as a lawyer, so I started looking for other jobs related to the sector. <\/span>I work in a small market,<\/span> so I was not finding any offers. That constraint led me to my first company, which offered high-level staffing services for law firms. As I moved into the Legal Tech sector, I began to discover all the opportunities technology offers to solve some complex problems related to law. The sector allowed me to move quickly and I am already on my third company.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

My greatest success has nothing to do with technology and law; the success comes from the team I have been lucky enough to build. I have the most brilliant, fun and hard-working team, and I love that the legal industry benefits from their great collective experience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

At the beginning, the biggest challenge was being taken seriously. It has been years in the trenches waiting for a respect that did not come from the start. With business maturity comes confidence in your company and in what it offers, as well as the evaporation of any failure syndrome. When you are trying to sell to large law firms, it is essential to be in a position of trust and to have a solid track record.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Like many entrepreneurs, I was pushed into the legal tech sector by frustration. Frustration at all the barriers in law: walls between law and technology, walls between law and other disciplines, walls between businesspeople and lawyers, walls between law schools <\/span>of different rank\/ranking and from different countries, walls between academics and students; and walls between lawyers and their clients. So, with the help of many people, I set out to create LawWithoutWalls, which, as its name suggests, is designed to break down the walls in the legal sector using technology.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

When I founded LawWithoutWalls (LWOW), there were no other law schools <\/span>dedicated to innovation and to thinking about teaching future lawyers. Back then, many thought I was crazy and that LWOW was a \u201cbluff\u201d because it focused on teamwork and on teaching what we call soft skills<\/i> <\/span>such as leadership, mentoring, empathy, boldness, entrepreneurial spirit, knowing how to listen, giving and receiving feedback; or having business acumen (note: LWOW also focused on strong skills<\/i> such as project management, technology, business planning, etc.). In short, it is important to highlight that LWOW was based on teamwork; skills that are unusual for law students. Since we started in 2011, many law schools have introduced courses related to improving team skills.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

My greatest challenge is trying to convince lawyers to learn to innovate, even if their business model works. My research suggests that innovation is a call for transformation in the legal sector. This is because, in the process of learning about innovation, lawyers must adopt the mindset, skills and behaviors that add value and, more importantly, satisfy clients.<\/span><\/p>\n \n

13. Kristen Sonday, co-Founder at Paladin (United States)<\/b><\/h4>\n

I entered the Legal Tech world because I saw first-hand how complicated the judicial system in the United States is while working at the United States Department of Justice. From then on I knew I wanted to work on something related to increasing access to justice. At Paladin we have built a technology platform that helps the legal sector run its pro bono programs more efficiently and increases the amount of pro bono work for those most in need.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What do you consider your greatest successes in the Legal Tech world?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

I am thrilled to share that in our first year, every partner on the Paladin platform (in-house teams to start) has increased their pro bono participation compared to last year. Some of them have even launched their first formal program using our software. This means we are helping immigrants, people suffering domestic violence, low-income entrepreneurs, and others obtain essential legal assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

What are the sector’s greatest challenges?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Unlike what happens in other industries, in a world ruled by billable hours, efficiency is not always a strong driver of innovation.
