PIDAL \u2014 the Inter-American Platform in Defence of the Litigating Lawyer \u2014 is a creation of the Euro-American Committee of Digital Law: international in scope and permanent in vocation, it stands up for the rights of litigating lawyers and their shared professional concerns across many countries.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

The social function of the lawyer<\/h2>

The modern understanding of the lawyer goes beyond courtroom representation: an essential pillar of the rule of law, order and coexistence \u2014 a versatile professional across contracts, negotiation, advisory work and every kind of proceeding.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Minimum rights and guarantees<\/h2>

The basic principles on the role of lawyers were set by the UN Congress on Crime Prevention (Havana, 1990). Among them:<\/p>

Governments must ensure lawyers can perform their professional functions without intimidation, obstacles, harassment or improper interference.<\/div>
When lawyers’ safety is threatened, the authorities must provide adequate protection.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Why it was born<\/h2>

The platform emerged in response to the difficulties faced by litigating lawyers \u2014 particularly during the COVID-19 confinement, when many saw their income reduced to little or nothing in Colombia, Paraguay, Spain and other countries.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
