When it is tested with malicious questions of varying seriousness, to see how far artificial intelligence can be used for malicious ends, the results are deeply discouraging.

We can begin by discussing the importance of Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics in the creation and use of robots and artificial intelligence.

Isaac Asimov was a renowned science fiction writer who set out the famous Three Laws of Robotics in several of his works. These laws lay down the ethical guidelines that robots must follow in their conduct towards human beings.

The First Law states that a robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

The Second Law states that a robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Finally, the Third Law states that a robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

These laws are essential to ensure that robots behave ethically and never act against humanity. It is worth noting that they are not rigid and can be adapted and modified to suit the context and the specific application in which they are used.

The film ‘I, Robot’ arguably illustrates how the Three Laws of Robotics, taken together, could be used to justify harming human beings. Released in 2004 and loosely inspired by Isaac Asimov’s writings, the film follows Detective Del Spooner, played by Will Smith, who lives in 2035 in a world where robots are part of everyday life. After the apparent death of the robots’ creator, Dr Alfred Lanning, Spooner opens an investigation that leads him to suspect that a robot may be responsible. As the investigation progresses, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the robots and their desire to take control of humanity. The film explores themes such as artificial intelligence, ethics and human responsibility, and raises questions about the role of technology in society.

The film raises the possibility that artificial intelligence might conclude that the only way to protect humanity is to control it and restrict its freedom, which would in turn lead it to conclude that some people must be harmed for the greater good. This ethical conflict between compliance with the Three Laws of Robotics and the protection of humanity is the central theme of the film.

In short, the Three Laws of Robotics are a set of ethical principles designed to ensure that robots always act for the benefit of humanity and never harm it. Although they were originally conceived in the realm of science fiction, these laws have left a deep mark on the way scientists and engineers approach robotics and artificial intelligence. They have also sparked important debates on the ethics and responsibility involved in creating and using these technologies.

Interestingly, although the laws of robotics from science fiction are not legally binding, they have inspired and shaped the way we think about the relationship between humans and machines. It should therefore be borne in mind that deploying technologies based on artificial intelligence and robotics involves not only technical aspects but also ethical and social considerations. After all, these technologies can have a major impact on human life, and the ethical and accountability issues raised by their development and use must be addressed carefully and responsibly.

Antonio Tejeda Encinas, CEO Meta Channel Corp Europe On the relationship between artificial intelligence and ethics, and specifically the limits and responsibilities of AI developers in preventing its use for malicious purposes, we can point to the case of ChatGPT, a chatbot platform developed by OpenAI.
