The vast amount of data we generate and collect online has become an essential resource for securing the green and digital transition. However, managing data properly has become an increasingly pressing issue in an ever more interconnected world.

Data management is the process of collecting, organising and storing data securely and effectively. As more data accumulates, chaos ensues if it is not managed properly. For example, a company without a clear data management policy could lose valuable information, or even face legal problems in the event of a data breach.

Data management has become even more critical since the implementation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR lays down strict rules on how the personal data of European citizens must be collected, stored and used. Companies that fail to comply can face significant fines.

To meet these challenges, companies and organisations must adopt a clear and effective data management policy. This includes collecting and storing data securely, protecting citizens’ privacy and rights, and disposing of data properly once it is no longer needed.
It is also important for companies to adopt an effective data analytics strategy to make the most of the data they collect. Data analysis allows companies to identify trends and patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. By using this data, they can make better-informed, data-driven decisions, enabling them to improve their operations and gain a competitive edge in the market.

Proper data management is also essential for the green transition. As companies and organisations seek to reduce their carbon footprint and adopt more sustainable practices, efficient data management can help cut energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. For example, by storing data in the cloud, companies can reduce their need for physical storage and thus lower their energy consumption.

In short, data is a valuable resource that can help drive the green and digital transition. However, proper data management is essential to ensure the privacy, security and efficiency of data. Companies and organisations must adopt a clear and effective data management policy, together with data analytics strategies, to make the most of its potential. In doing so, they can improve their operations, make better-informed decisions and reduce their environmental impact.

At Meta Channel Corp, we have introduced effective data management policies for the companies that have requested them, with the aim of protecting their customers’ privacy and security and of driving both their business success and environmental sustainability. We have put measures in place to ensure that data is collected and stored securely and confidentially, and that it is used ethically and responsibly.

We have also guided companies in investing in advanced technology so that they can analyse and process large volumes of data. This has enabled them to improve their products and services and to offer their customers a more personalised and satisfying experience.
In short, at Meta Channel Corp we are aware that sound data management is essential for business success and for meeting our clients’ needs. That is why we will keep working to improve their data management practices and keep them at the forefront of the digital economy.

As regards the European Union:
With this aim, three UNE specifications (Spanish standards) have been developed and published:
✔UNE 0077 – ‘Gobierno del dato’ (data governance)
✔UNE 0078 – ‘Gestión del dato’ (data management)
✔UNE 0079 – ‘Calidad del dato’ (data quality)

These standards are designed to be applied together, providing a robust, harmonised reference framework that encourages the adoption of sustainable and effective data practices.
Each specification takes a process-oriented approach, and each process is described in terms of its contribution to the seven components of a data governance and management system, as introduced in COBIT 2019:
➡ Process, detailing its purpose, outcome, tasks and outputs in accordance with ISO 8000-61.
➡ Principles, policies and frameworks.
➡ Organisational structures, identifying the bodies responsible for data governance and decision-making.
➡ Information required and generated in each process.
➡ Culture, #ethics and behaviour, understood as the individual and collective conduct of people and of the organisation.
➡ People, skills and competencies needed to carry out all activities, take decisions and implement corrective action.
➡ Services, infrastructure and applications, covering the technologies that support data management, data quality management and data governance processes.
We now await the forthcoming publication of the icing on the cake: 👉UNE 0080 ‘Modelo de evaluación de madurez en datos’ (data maturity assessment model)

There is also a proposal for a European Data Act. At the end of 2021, the European Parliament and the Member States reached an agreement to take forward the proposed Regulation on European data governance (Data Governance Act). It seeks to create the processes and structures needed to facilitate data sharing among all relevant stakeholders.

Antonio Tejeda Encinas Meta Channel Corp President of the Euro-American Committee of Digital Law - CEA Digital Law and Radio Hemisférica In the digital age we live in, data has become a fundamental component of our economy and society.
